Before the race, Marty McKellips, the chief executive officer of the American Red Cross of Central Texas spoke to Club Red regarding the Resilient from the Heart initiative. Unlike our fun night of racing super fast electric go-karts, Marty talked about this real life race for preparedness in Central Texas. As we recently passed the first anniversary of the most destructive fire in Texas history, we know that it really isn’t a question of if the next disaster will strike; it is a question of when, and how prepared will we be for it?

As a response to the devastating fires, Marty explained that the American Red Cross of Central Texas has launched a year-long community exercise designed to improve our collective ability to recover after disaster strikes. The American Red Cross responds to more than 70,000 disasters each year, which provides the Red Cross with broad experience assisting with challenges faced by any community when the worst happens. The idea behind the initiative is to be prepared locally, so we can respond and recover more quickly from a disaster.

Our local initiative, Resilience from the Heart, will bring together local governments, faith-based organizations, businesses and the non-profit community to test our relationships, processes, and systems, which will help us better anticipate needs and identify gaps in our safety net before another disaster strikes. The Red Cross will use lessons learned from the wildfires and other past disasters to shape our plans for the future.

Throughout the next year, the Red Cross will provide the community with updates on what was learned and the steps that will be taken to make all of Central Texas stronger and more resilient. The Red Cross will invite all of their partners to engage in this process and work together to make Central Texas the most resilient region in the country. Club Red recently participated in one of these drills that simulated the type of Disaster Service Center the Red Cross would open with partners after a disaster.
